ASEPTIC TECHNIQUE
Asepsis is defined as preventing exposure to
microorganisms and prevention of infection. Aseptic techniques are critical
before, during and after surgery.
Basic Aseptic Principles:
- All articles must be sterilized before use in
procedure.
- If in doubt about sterility of item or person, consider
it not sterile.
- All persons who touch sterile articles must be sterile.
- Non-sterile persons never reach across a sterile field.
- Draped tables are sterile only above the table level.
- Gown front is sterile only from waist to shoulder
level.
- Moisture causes contamination.
Some aseptic techniques that need special attention:
- Touch only "prepped" areas with instruments
and hands.
- Keep operating fields draped.
- Do not let catheters or implants become contaminated.
- Use sterile solutions.
- Disinfect the tops of containers of solutions.
- Use sterile technique to access implanted catheters.
